Western Canadian Premiere
Unbound
This latest work uses Chinese opera influences, a
wonderful score by Giorgio Magnanensi, and features six powerful
performers, including Wen Wei Wang himself. Unbound is inspired by
the choreographer’s visit to Toronto’s Bata Shoe Museum and distant
memories of his mother and her story of experiencing the pain of foot-
binding as a young child. The process of working with 3 male and 3
female dancers – as well as experimenting with “Three Inch Lotus
Shoes” used by female Chinese opera performers – gave way to
inevitable human relationships, emotions and sexualities. With
athletic and virtuosic movement as well as subtle and intricate
gestures, Wen Wei Dance explores the transformation from “bound” to
“unbound”.
This piece is a co-commission of CanDance Network Creation Fund, the
Canada Dance Festival, Dancing on the Edge, Harborfront Centre,
National Arts Centre, The Brian Webb Dance Company and L’Agora de la
Danse in collaboration with Danse Danse.
