Josh Beamish Performers Lara Barclay Josh Beamish Reid Colton Heather Dotto Cai Glover Crystal Wills “Allemande”, a work for six dancers that exists as a physical deconstruction of a Bach Cello suite and the accompanying social dances of the Baroque era. "The motion… is chiefly characterized by the passion or mood of sweet expectation. For there is something heartfelt, something longing and also gratifying, in this melody: clearly music on which hopes are built.” - Johann Mattheson (1739). Beamish's work is known for its preservation of a technical esthetic juxtaposed against complex series of isolations performed at hyper-speed. “One of the most gratifying evenings of dance presented on New York's downtown arts scene this season” - Lisa Jo Sagolla, Backstage In just 6 short years, MOVE: the company has emerged as one of Western Canada’s most prolific dance companies. Founded in 2005 by current Artistic Director, Josh Beamish, the company has performed across North America at venues such as Montreal’s Tangente and Studio 303, NYC’s Joyce SoHo and San Francisco’s The Garage. Laura Hicks Vancouver, BC ![]() Choreographer Laura Hicks Performers Anne Cooper Caroline Farquhar Laura Hicks Rachael Wadham “White shirt, black tie. The clock ticks and I am restless. Someone is laughing. Yearning, looking, and not finding. The crash of cutlery makes my blood boil. Everything is familiar but it all feels so foreign. Everything begins to feel like a performance – a dream I don’t want to be in, but it never ends.” – Laura Hicks. Nosh brings together forays into combining sound, movement, and text. Looping sound effects with live improvisation, musician Rachael Wadham builds both foreboding and whimsical environments while Laura Hicks sets the stage for an Alice in the looking glass type journey into the fine details and hard edges found surfacing beneath that which appears uniform. Sometimes humorous and always unexpected, Nosh explores sincerity, hunger, and the search for meaning while minding the proper placement of salt and pepper. Nosh was created with the support of The Dance Centre Artist in residency program, the Canada Council for the Arts, EDAM Dance, 45 West, The Sunshine Coast Dance Society, and the Kettle of Fish Restaurant. Forever curious and always moving, Laura Hicks places a hybrid sense of perspective on environments and relationships she finds perplexing – including her years waiting in the world of fine dining. Laura’s work has been shown at major venues throughout Vancouver as well as through artistic residencies in throughout BC. As an interpreter Laura has been inspired by her work with MACHiNENOiSY, Restless Productions, DanStaBat, The Liz Lerman Dance Exchange (MD), and Random Scream (BE). Laura is a recipient of the Holy Body Tattoo Award and has been supported as by the Canada Council for the Arts and the BC Arts Council since 2007. As of 2011, Laura has been working and performing in Toronto. http://laurahicks.wordpress.com *Nosh will be performed as part of EDGE ONE on Friday July 8 and as part of EDGE TWO on Sunday July 10 EDGE ONE Firehall Arts Centre Friday July 8, 2011 @ 7pm (Laura Hicks, Josh Beamish, James Gnam) Sunday July 10, 2011 @ 9pm (Josh Beamish, James Gnam) CLICK HERE TO BUY TICKETS
