Usha Gupta

Asht Nayika is a women’s life long journey from beginning to end. From long lonely nights until the appearance of dawn. These eight different states of women are revealed through their behavior under different circumstances and their roles are portrayed in various situations including different status. Varying relationships to a lover or husband, and from a younger and older perspective, many times the stakes are high and emotions run deep. In this portrayal, women is supreme and the role of men is symbolic. The music accentuates the situation. Globally, women are the same but they communicate different expressions depending on their cultural background and individualism. Through this artistic experience I am trying to connect the various dance forms, music, poetry, and women’s inner fire – Usha Gupta

 The Principle Eight Nayikas
1. Vasaka Saija – once expecting union with her lover decorates herself to receive him
2. Virohitkanthita – one who is distressed by separation pining for love
3. Khandita – this nayika is hurt by the infidelity of her lover who is betraying her. When he returns in the morning after spending the night with another, she asks him to go away
4. Vipraladha: one deceived by her lover. The cheated one, this Nayika is waiting for her lover to come but she sees him going to another woman’s home
5. Swadhinapatika: one having her lover or husband under her total control
6. Kalahandarita: one who is separated from her lover after quarreling, turns him away and is unhappy
7. Proshitpatika: when this nayika looks at his picture she thinks of him when he is away on sojourn
8. Abhisarika: one who travels away to meet her lover for the rendezvous. She encounters various obstacles like thunderstorms, rain and lightning. A serpent crosses her path, frightening her.

Over the years Usha Gupta has choreographed many dance dramas that have received widespread acclaim. This lush body of work is the result of many years of efforts and dedication to the cause of multiculturalism and to bringing together the diverse cultural forms of art among our communities. Ms. Gupta has collaborated with many prominent performers and performance companies such as the Brian Webb Dance Company, Stage Polaris, Vinok Folkdance Ensemble and the Edmonton Opera. Mrs. Gupta’s recent work has combined her love for Indian dance with the surroundings of her Canadian home.
