Nudity (white). Absent of content.

“That this first knowledge is devoid of content can, in fact, mean that it is not the knowledge of something but rather the knowledge of pure knowability.â€
(Agamben. Nudities, page 81)

This restructuring of the idea of nudity was the beginning point for research. To have a body, absent of content, unable to speak or move or understand its presence in space became the performance. It brought about the question of representation; how can I represent something if I don’t yet know anything? So the research turned from the body, absent of content, to the learning body and its small fights for understanding.

Desire (brown). Absent of means.

“…objet petit a, as the object of fantasy, is that ‘something in me more than myself on [who’s] account of which I perceive myself’ as ‘worth of the Other’s desire’.
(Zizek. The Plague of Fantasies, page 9)

The construction of fantasy and its fluid integration into personal identity motivated by desire was the point of departure for this research. The idea of the ‘dispositif’ defined by Agamben and Deleuze became helpful to rethink desire as a mechanical process - one that could break down, rust, and potentially die. What affectations would this carry into the body or a performance? How will the body adapt to fill the void left when desire is cast out?

Do what you can

What are we worth? How does our confidence shift based on our environments, our choices- how much we know- our earnings- our success in our work? When we walk into the bar- we enter an arena of judgment- of desire and intoxication, a place to feel connected and be seen, to prove ourselves. These are the places that bring us together and pit us against one another –places we go to be inspired or validated by others, or even to test our limits of invincibility. Our daydreams of control and success, of dominance and vulnerability- a celebration of us all played out at the bar. Performed by Ballet BC dancers Leon Feizo-Gas, Alexis Fletcher and SFU’s Rob Kitsos.

Rob Kitsos is an acclaimed dancer, dance instructor, performing artist, musician, and choreographer who has performed across North America, Europe and Asia. He has performed his own and other works at international festivals including the Spoletto Festival in Charleston South Carolina, the World Expo in Lisbon, the Grec Festival in Barcelona, the Palais Royale in Paris, and others in Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Netherlands, Hong Kong and Venezuela. He has been commissioned by artists and companies in Hong Kong, Seattle and Vancouver including Bard on the Beach and the BC Ballet. Rob has been a member of more than fifteen performing companies including the Doug Elkins Dance Company, Gina Gibney Dance, Hillary Easton, Jannis Brenner, KT Niehoff, Colin Connor, Pat Graney, the Chamber Dance Company, Peter Bingham and the Berkshire Ballet.
