Wednesday July 13, 2011 @ 12PM Vancouver Public Library This Performance is FREE A mixed program of dance featuring a special new collaboration betwee Aeriosa and Eagle Song Dancers and an excerpt from Aeriosa’s In Situ, which premiered as part of the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad. Aeriosa resumes their relationship with architecture, live music and vertical dance with the generous support of the Vancouver Public Library. Traditional canoe singer/dancer Bob Baker and Artistic Director of Aeriosa Julia Taffe, will lead a shared ceremony of Squamish song and dance recalling an ancient Coast Salish ritual of respect for the traditional territories of others. Squamish canoe drum dancing combined with Aeriosa’s signature vertical choreography, will truly celebrate 10,000 years of Squamish culture in the 125th anniversary of modern-day Vancouver. The wildly popular excerpt from In Situ entitled “Business Woman’s Tango” returns to grace the elegant (and highest!) curved wall of the 22-storey Federal Office Tower at 300 West Georgia. Founded in 2001 by Artistic Director Julia Taffe, Aeriosa explores new methods of creation and dissemination, moving beyond conventional forms of artistic practice. Aeriosa blends artistry and athleticism with the concerns of human ecology. Through curiosity, collaboration and integrity, the company’s work fuses dance, music and technology into public rituals of transformation. Aeriosa investigates relationships between humans and their natural, social and built environments by crafting performances in response to architecture and landscapes. Reinterpreting gravity, Aeriosa artists use harnesses and ropes to access an enormous range of space, flocking and lofting in spiraling arcs, evoking potent imagery of humans in flight. Encompassing walls, ledges and rooftops in public gathering places, Aeriosa performances animate vertical space, reconsidering buildings as stages and neighborhoods as theatres. The company engages communities through free performances, firmly believing art enriches lives and that all people, regardless of income status or other barriers, should have access to dance.
