Limb(e)s is a contemporary aerial dance that explores the limbo after loss. Jeremiah Hughes and Gabrielle Martin draw from their experience in circus and dance to question what it means to hold onto or let go of one in our “darkest hour”. Using two bodies, rope cradles and elevation, Limb(e)s unfolds to the haunting music of composer Nicolas Bernier, in a dystopian landscape brought to life by lighting designer Sophie Tang and cinematographer Jessica Han. The result is a hypnotic, destabilizing narrative full of mourning, distant hope, and eerie beauty.

Gabrielle Martin is a choreographer and contemporary and aerial dancer, originally from Vancouver, the unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples. As a choreographer, she is in perpetual study of tenacious, defiant bodies and those autonomic states that rapture the body. She obtained her BFA in Contemporary Dance from Concordia University (Montreal, 2009) and presented her choreography at festivals across Canada and in the US from 2009-2011. The body’s ephemeral subversion of gravity drew her to aerial dance; Gabrielle performed over 1,400 shows internationally as an aerial acrobat and dancer with Cavalia (2011-2015), and as a principal character and aerial soloist with Cirque du Soleil’s TORUK – The First Flight (2015-2019). In 2019, she presented Limb(e)s, an aerial dance-theatre piece she co-choreographed under Ci, at Montreal Complètement Cirque and Edinburgh Festival Fringe with Assembly Festival. Gabrielle completed a certificate in Circus Dramaturgy at the Centre National des Arts du Cirque (France) in 2020.
Jeremiah Hughes began his training in competitive dance at the Canadian Dance Company (Toronto). After a decade of competing internationally, he expanded his craft with acting and singing at the Randolph College for the Performing Arts (Toronto). He was a featured soloist on both So You Think You Can Dance and So You Think You Can Dance Canada and went on to complete an internship at the Broadway Dance Center (NYC). Jeremiah has performed with artists such as Bruno Mars, Meatloaf, and Taylor Swift, and in large-scale shows such as: PEEPSHOW, JUBILEE!, Britain’s Got Talent, Franco Dragone’s LE REVE and Cirque du Soleil’s Viva ELVIS. From 2015-2019, he toured as the lead male character of Ralu in Cirque Du Soleil’s TORUK – The First Flight. With Ci, he co-created Limb(e)s and performed as a dance and aerial artist in the presentations at Montréal Complètement Cirque and at Edinburgh Festival Fringe with Assembly Festival (2019).
